Fabric & heritage
The Cornish National tartan was designed in the 1960s by E.E. Morton Nance, founder of the Old Cornwall Society, to represent Cornwall's Celtic identity alongside Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Isle of Man and Brittany. The colors symbolize Kernow's unique heritage: golden yellow for the Cornish flag (St Piran's banner) and tin mining history; black for the rich tin and copper ore; turquoise for the surrounding Celtic Sea; white for purity and the waves; and red for the Celtic bloodline. Woven in Scotland, this 16 oz cloth holds crisp pleats through hours of celebration. Dry clean only; store hanging to preserve pleat memory.
Occasions & styling
- St Piran's Day (March 5): March in Cornwall's national day—black and gold pride across the Duchy
- Cornish weddings: Pair with black Prince Charlie jacket, dress sporran, and ghillie brogues for unforgettable groom or groomsman presence with true Kernow distinction
- Celtic festivals: Lowender Peran, Padstow Obby Oss, Golowan Festival—stand out among Scottish and Irish tartans
- Cornish gatherings worldwide: Connect with Kernow diaspora in Australia, South Africa, USA—wear the tartan that unites Cornishmen everywhere
Size & fit
Kilt sits high on natural waist (above navel). Measure firmly—garment will relax 0.5-1 inch. Length traditionally mid-kneecap. Need help? Use our video measuring guide or choose "Tailor Fit Kit" at checkout. Lead time: 4-6 weeks for hand-pleating.
Why 8 yards?
The traditional Highlander kilt requires eight full yards of tartan—double the cloth of modern casual kilts. This creates deeper pleats, fuller swing, and the unmistakable silhouette that has defined Celtic formal wear for centuries. The Cornish National tartan, with its brilliant golden-yellow base and official Kernow status, ensures you'll be recognized as a son or daughter of Cornwall before you speak a word—carrying St Piran's legacy from Land's End to the Tamar and beyond.
