The main difference between 5-yard and 8-yard kilt is, the amount of the fabric is used in the kilts. This difference also affects in different features of kilt, especially in kilt pleats and weight.
PLEATS: The front of both the kilts looks similar to each other with two layers of fabric lying flat one over the other. The difference is on the back pleated section. As the more fabric is required in 8-yard kilt that we make more pleats to use all the cloth. Pleats are more densely folded and look less open as you move.
WEIGHT: 5-yard kilt is about 37.5% lighter than 8-yard kilt, though the exact weight of your kilt will vary according to the tartan you chose from our range of 22 clan tartans. Due to being light weight 5-yard kilt is called causal kilts.
TRADITION: 8-yard kilts are called traditional Scottish kilts, three more yards of material give the kilt an extra fullness for look that is called confidence, heritage, and pride. 8-yard kilt has deeper pleats that’s why kilt will hang and swing better.
